Freeing the Midline
Description: This class is for practitioners who want to enhance and refine their craft using alternative assessment and palpation skills, as well as techniques that free the midline/spine. It provides an approach that is somewhat unique or niche in massage circles, yet is supremely effective, evidence-based, and fundamental in chiropractic, cranial, somatic education, and osteopathic theories. (We will not be doing chiropractic adjustments!)
This approach considers conscious messaging using mechanosensors to and from the brain, joints, and fascia as a requirement for creating more comprehensive, lasting change. It is powerful as a perspective because it is the process that was used by the embryo to create the body in the first place, and these methods and pathways have been conserved and in constant use throughout adulthood.
Part 1 will include methods to assess and address issues and imbalances either with or related to forces upon the spine itself. The major muscles that can apply pressure to or compress, distort, or subluxate will be covered, along with how to recognize and release intra-osseous compression within the vertebrae and ribs. Part 2 will focus more on releasing areas that influence the midline, such as the neck, shoulder joint and girdle, the hip muscles, hamstrings, psoas, and IT band (lateral chain) using manual medicine neuromuscular reeducation techniques.
Although these methods are derived from different principles and theories, they are applicable to any type of bodywork practice. Because they are based in true internal mechanisms that the body operates from, the changes will happen quickly and with much less effort by you since the body itself will be making the changes as you track and monitor the flow of input and response. You may reference “Somatic Intelligence - Volume 8, Movement is Medicine” for more detailed background and evidence in support of this approach.
